Forget clubs and pubs, the place to be seen Instagramming these days is the late night line up for the desserts at Chester St Bakery and Bar in Newstead.
And, because it cleverly combines cake and booze, you don’t have to miss out on a cocktail or two.
While there’s a diverse menu of savoury options including breakfast tacos, pork tacos and rib eye steak sandwiches, there’s another kind of sandwich on the menu I can’t go past: the ice cream sandwich.
I am all about Chester St Bakery’s smooth creamy ice cream wedged between two generous chewy cookies. It’s a massive mouthful of the perfect ratio of soft and crunchy textures; so good every other ice cream sandwich pales in comparison.
There are other colourful and creative desserts on offer too – my friend still texts me about the cheesecake she had weeks ago, and it’s possible the popularity of their Nutella hot chocolate, Nutella pavlova and Nutella doughnuts is contributing to the current Australian Nutella shortage crisis.
Generally I’ve found the service at Chester St Bakery to be friendly, and considering the crowds, fairly quick. I’m not going to lie and tell you it’s totally awesome though – it’s a bit hit and miss. And last visit while waiting for our takeaway drink order we overheard a customer complaining about the long wait for drinks cop attitude from the coffee guy. Considering the coffee guy appeared to be more interested in impressing one of his lady coworkers than actually making coffee, his attitude left a sour taste in my mouth. But then I ate an ice cream sandwich and everything was sweet again.
Chester St Bakery and Bar is open seven days, from 7am til late. Brunch is served until 3pm each day. For more and their menu see their website.
