The night I visited Kajoku there was a very happy looking group of people enjoying a literal tower of beer, which rose majestically over the table like a sunrise that promises to bring the worst hangover of your life.
I was more in a pajamas and television kind of mood, but immediately earmarked Kajoku for a future sit down visit. It’s clearly a place where they like you to sit and stay for a while.
Sandwiched between Hello World and The Shingle Inn, the entrance to Kajoku on Ruthven St is easy to miss, but isn’t that part of the fun? Personally, I like a little mystery with my Friday night take out.
Once you’re in and up the stairs the restaurant unfolds into a large, modern space, divided into rooms with traditional seating or tables and chairs. The main part room was fit to burst with chattering people and equipped with an absolutely huge television – definitely not the kind of place for a quiet conversation.
We had a noodle craving, so went with the yakisoba: tasty pan fried noodles with beef and vegetables. And we tried a warm beef and noodle salad; unfortunately I don’t remember the name, but it had a sweet tang and used delicate glass noodles, which I preferred over the yakisoba.
I could not go past gyoza and these were a highlight. Crispy delectable parcels of goodness!
And, we would have been fools not to try the Korean fried chicken, which was holy crap levels of delicious. We got the plain version, but even so I could not stop popping those morsels into my mouth. Obviously I can never order this again if I want to keep fitting into pants.
Kojuku is a class act in Toowoomba’s restaurant scene. The service was friendly, relatively quick considering the packed house, and the food fresh and delicious. Remember when all you could get in the way of Asian cuisine in Toowoomba was MSG-laden stodgy sweet and sour stuff with greasy fried rice? Those days are way over and Kojuku is leading the pack in offering a varied, well crafted menu.
Get yourself to Kojuku for some super yum food. And there’s Karaoke rooms there too. If you’re into that sort of thing.
Find their menu on Facebook.
