Weetwood is fast approaching, but there’s still plenty of shopping time left if you haven’t nailed down your look.
This year Laser Clinics Australia Toowoomba are sponsoring the Fashions on the Field at Weetwood.
Clinic Owner Amanda Thurbin said not only is the Weetwood Cup one of the oldest sprint races in the country and a premier event for Toowoomba and surrounding areas, but the ladies and gents on the Darling Downs are known for their style and she can’t wait to see the fashions on the day.
Ms Thurbin said her own memories of Weetwood are of a fun day – lots of beautiful fashion and headwear, watching the races and enjoying the day with friends.
“We are delighted to provide prizes on the day with the Fashions on the Field winners and runners up receiving Laser Clinics Australia vouchers. In addition, we will also be giving all Fashions on the Field entrants a $25 voucher to put towards a skin treatment. Everyone wins!” she said.
Dressing for autumn racing can be tricky, as the weather can be unpredictable, and the fresh florals that are a staple of racing fashion have been replaced in stores by winter stock. However, there’s plenty of room for creativity in an autumn fashion look, as you can play with texture, pattern and colour.
Here’s a breakdown of the AW18 trends that you can incorporate into your Weetwood look.
High necklines
The dress code for a traditional race day like Weetwood is classic, elegant and never revealing. So the new prim and proper trend for dresses with Victorian-inspired high necklines is a perfect option for race day.
Find this buttoned up trend at H&M, Veronika Maine and Forever New.
Clockwise: H&M Dress with flounce $39.99, Forever New Madeleine Cap Sleeve Dress $159.99, Veronika Maine Oriental Garden Dress $259.00, H&M Crinkle Chiffon Dress $44.99, and Forever New Zsa Zsa Lace Dress $159.99.
Burgundy baby
This winter, if it’s not burgundy, we don’t want it! Actually, all shades on the pink to red spectrum are acceptable, but in autumn and winter rich, deep burgundy just feels so right. If burgundy isn’t your thing, look for other earthy tones like mustard, or dreamy, dusty pinks.

Texture, pattern and oversized silhouettes
Make your outfit a tactile experience!
Autumn/winter lends itself to luxe fabrics that flow beautifully and feel great. Velvet is absolutely in vogue, as is tweed and jacquard. Wool never goes out of style, along with eternal favourite lace.
Oversized, but still tailored, blazers and jackets can be added to your ensemble in autumn to keep you warm and stylish. Talking about oversized silhouettes – wide legged pants are back! And asymmetrical hemlines are having a moment.
When it comes to pattern make it just short of matchy matchy. Add a manly plaid print, or a feminine frill or ruffle (or combine the two!) and ditch the dainty spring florals for flowers that are bolder, bigger and darker.
Clockwise: Ditch tradition and go with pants like these Portmans Mad For You Pants $89.95, Cover up in style with the H&M Short Jacket $69.99 and H&M Double Breasted Jacket $79.99. Combine your love of lace and asymmetric ruffles with the Cue Lace Asymmetric Ruffle Dress now on sale for $106.08. Add a luxe fluffy faux fur jacket like this Florence and Marabel Unreal Dream Nude Jacket $309.00 or a sleek tuxedo style with the H&M Fitted Jacket $59.99. Florence and Marabel Mela Purdie Retreat Pant $335.00 hits the oversized mark and the Cue Golden Paisley Velvet Dress $335.00 combines three trends in earth tones, big flowers and velvet.
Hair
Oscar Oscar Toowoomba Salon Partner Hollie-Jay Taylor said Weetwood is a traditional style race day, which means millinery is a must.
“With this in mind, it is important to choose a simple hair style that will complement whatever hair embellishment you have chosen for the event,” Ms Taylor said.
Here are her top three go-to looks.
Natural textured waves with a centre part
Lived in curls have been huge this season and the natural textured look is incredibly popular. It is an easy, do-it-yourself style. Keep it on trend with a centre part and minimal volume. The perfect down-style to fit under your fascinator.
Sleek low bun
No time for hat hair? A straight, sleek bun is a classic style that will sit nicely under any hat or hair embellishment. Timeless.
Fishtail Braid
Braids are my absolute go-to hairstyle as there are so many variations that can be tailored to suit all hair types. It is a hairstyle that tends to look better as it gets messier, so it is ideal for a long day out.
