A Christmas concert featuring world music at the Empire Theatre on 12 December aims to not only raise some Christmas spirit, but funds to rebuild a school in earthquake-damaged Nepal.
When a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on 25 April this year owners of one of Toowoomba’s most loved restaurants Sofra Turkish Cuisine took action to support their 10 Nepalese staff through the creation of a not-for-profit organisation, Goodwill Village.
Now, to bring the community together with music and culture Goodwill Village has organised an amazing line up of world musicians to help raise the funds needed to rebuild the school in Satyadevi, which was devastated by the earthquake. Satyadevi is special for Goodwill Village, as the head chef of Sofra, Mangal Gurung, is originally from this area and continues to support his family who still live there.
Goodwill Village president and Sofra owner Moyalia Tomak said they aim to raise $125,000 to build an earthquake proof school.
“Every cent raised goes directly to building the school and we just need to raise $125,000. We are still looking for sponsors too as the concert alone will not raise enough revenue to reach our target,” she said.
Music for Nepal will feature world-renowned Tibetan musician Tenzin Choegyal and other well known musicians including Spirit of Bhakti, MZAZA, Gabe & Cecilia Brandolini, Vasil and Vasil Lolo, The Damian Black Band, TIAPYE, Dheeraj Shrestha and Nepalese band featuring Suresh Shrestha, Sundar Dangol, Raz Shrestha and Raj Knagarkoti.
The night will also include an exotic market, henna, dancing and Turkish and Nepali dinner with bar. Tickets are available through the Empire Theatre booking office on 1300 655 299 or at www.empiretheatre.com.au
Donations can be made directly through www.goodwillvillage.org or Goodwill Village donation tins are located at various locations throughout Toowoomba.
