My wardrobe is more Havaianas than heels, so when Grand Central invited me to attend one of their Grazia styling sessions I put my hand way in the air for Sport Luxe.
Hosted by Grazia’s editorial director Rachel Sharp and fashion blogger Helen Chik, the session was a fun 45 minutes of style insight and tips on how to embrace a relaxed, yet chic look.
Firstly, what is Sport Luxe? Aside from being Helen’s signature style, it’s functional, comfortable fashion that mixes athletic pieces with your normal wardrobe. However it’s definitely not wearing your normal gym gear out and about or having coffee with your friends in your activewear.
Here’s a little run down of what we learned about Sport Luxe, or athleisure:
- It’s all about the trainers baby. Make your feet happy and wear your street shoes with everything – pants, jeans, skirts and dresses. (Side note, there’s not a sock in sight in this trend, so invest in those invisible ones.) Your trainers should be sleek and street, not Sneans. The current shoe darlings are the Adidas Superstar but heads up, the Gazelle is making a comeback.
- When it’s too hot to cover your toes, slide into comfort. Slides and sandals (like these Tevas) are making a comeback big time – see how Gigi Hadid works them with her wardrobe.
- Layer up! Sport Luxe is all about soft fabrics – so when they’re layered you’re not going to get too bulky. Add a denim jacket to a dress, slinky bomber, or sleeveless hoodie over a tank to give your look extra texture and interest.
- Go back to school. Backpacks are a thing. We’re not talking the actual Roxy backpack you used to lug to school though. If it’s too big it’ll overwhelm you, too small and you won’t even be able to fit your phone. Look for a happy medium in interesting fabrics and finishes.
- Glam up! The reason you can get away with wearing Sport Luxe almost anywhere (maybe not in a really formal office, definitely not at a wedding) is because it’s about elevating the every day and looking polished. Pay attention to your hair, makeup and accessories and this is how Sport Luxe goes from daggy to delightful.

And what else can we expect from style this season? Helen says we should look for:
- Embellishments
- Patchwork
- Double denim
- Star motifs
- Velvet
- And a return to the 90s!
