When you order a triple chocolate chip pancake that comes with a drizzle of chocolate sauce, ice cream and maple syrup you know what you’re signing up for: massive. sugar. overload. It didn’t disappoint.
Canadian themed Sugar Maples is bringing a little slice of Canuck sweetness to Toowoomba’s CBD, and because the great white north is the land that produces the best maple syrup ever this is good news for us!
Only open for a few months, Sugar Maples is fitted out with a stage for live entertainment, shelves for books and some comfy lounges for hanging out in.
It’s styled as a bookstore/cafe, although rather than being located all in one section the books are spread out on shelves lining the length of the store – so browsing requires doing a lap of the entire shop, which is great for working off the pancakes but a little awkward for finding books.
One of the best things about Sugar Maples, aside from the drinkable maple syrup, is its opening hours. They’re breathing a bit of life into the CBD and serving up the sweetness – pancakes, waffles, coffee and specialty drinks until 10pm weeknights and 11pm on weekends, meaning Sugar Maples is a great option for an after movie or dinner coffee and treat all week long.
While the kitchen behind the front counter leaves a seemingly permanent lingering smell of bacon throughout the store that vegetarians won’t love, my pancake was good and the service was fast and friendly. Overall, Sugar Maples is a friendly, welcoming space in Toowoomba’s café scene, definitely a sweet spot worth revisiting.
