It’s Sunday morning and your belly is rumbling. If you have an obliging cook in the house the best thing to do is stay in bed and wait for the breakfast tray to be brought in to you. Or maybe it’s Sunday lunchtime and your belly is still rumbling. No food has appeared at your bedside.
Throw on your shoes, grab your car keys and drop your kids off at the grandparents, because while a lot of cafés choose to close for the day, there are still plenty of places open and filled with all the bacon.
- Café Valetta – open 8am to 3.30pm
Directly across the road from Queens Park – so you can get your Sunday stroll in after breakfast – Café Valetta offers a beautiful atmosphere and tasty food. Start your day with pancakes or enjoy a warming winter lunch of lamb shanks. An antipasto sharing platter and a glass of wine sounds like a wonderful way to spend a Sunday.
- Pump 123 – open 7am to 2pm
Get your coffee without getting out of the car or your pajamas at Pump 123’s drive through. If you did dress up, head inside where there is a cabinet of cake, sweets, sandwiches, and the usual hot breakfast line up – including vegetarian options.
- Jillys Café – open 8am to 2pm
With a somewhat limited brekky menu focus your attention on lunch, where you’ll find pasta, salads, light meals (nachos anyone?), or even steak. Jillys to me will always mean Jillys Fries – and for $7 for a bowl that feeds two that’s some awesome value.
- Engine Room Café – open 7am to 4pm
Claiming the title as Toowoomba’s best breakfast (weigh in on this with your opinions in the comments) the Engine Room Café recommends booking on Sundays. Everything is made fresh on site and the menu starts with pancakes, lambs fry and eggs benedict before moving on to grilled salmon, burgers and salad. And there’s a kids’ corner to keep them happy.
- Park House Café – open 7am to 9.30pm
Also across the road from Queens Park the Park House Café is one of the few places open after 3pm on Sundays. There are a few solid vegetarian options in each menu category – omelette, burger, salad, and melt and plenty of protein heavy picks for us carnivores. Grab a glass of wine and relax on a Sunday avo.
- Ortem – open 7am to 4pm
With a flexible menu (For a small price you can share! You can alter! You can ask for a smaller serve!) Ortem is all about accommodating your tastes. Brekky features eggs benny, French toast and lunch is all about burgers, salads and soup. Also, there’s sweet treats.
- Wray Organic – open 8am to 5pm
A great option for vegetarians, Wray Organic serves up filling and tasty fare like their roast vegie toastie. And once you’re done with your 100% organic coffee you can wander around the store and stock up on supplies for a healthy Sunday night dinner.
- Raw Energy – open 7am to 3pm (2pm in winter)
Just FYI – the smoothies at Raw Energy are all kinds of good and filling, but if you need more than liquid, the menu features all day breakfast and lunch options of burgers, wraps, fruit salad, acai bowls, salads and soups. And don’t forget the fresh juice and coffee!
- The Angel Café – open 7am to 5pm (kitchen closes at 4pm)
Long time Southtown favourite the Angel Café uses local produce where possible and offers a huge array of options. Offering cafe favourites like burgers, nachos and sandwiches you’ll also find a kids menu and some gluten free options. Try one of their crazy milkshakes or get yourself a good old fashioned spider.
- Milk & Honey Espresso Bar – open from 6am to 5pm
Focused on grab and go options and a tasty all day breakfast menu, Milk & Honey Espresso Bar is open every day except Christmas Day – so it’s your new public holiday hangout. Try the avocado with labna, house made crumpets or pick up a pastry to takeaway. Be sure to take a snap of the beautifully branded coffee cups too.
- Little Seed by Firefly – open 7am to 3pm
They are closed on Monday and Tuesdays but make up for that by throwing open the doors on Sundays. Little Seed is a meat free zone, all menu items are vegan and gluten free. We love the sound of the Buckwheat Pancakes with caramelised fruits and dark chocolate sauce or how about Kipfler fries with date and chilli relish?
Is your Sunday favourite in the list?
