Ocean Leaves, a rag-tag collection of multi-instrumentalists from Brisbane are bringing their rich, emotive sound to TheGRID Sound this Saturday night (26 September) where they’ll launch their new EP Winter Heart.
Band leader, Canadian import Timothy Poitras, said Winter Heart is a new direction for the band.
“Musically it’s definitely a step in a new direction” Poitras said. “Musically it’s the most ambitious thing that the band has done. Thematically it’s a little bit darker than the previous release and contains the first songs for the band that are wholly collaborative.”
Usually a five-piece outfit, they sometimes have up to eight people playing, creating an indie folk style that’s enriched and enhanced by cello, double bass, piano, banjo, horns and even the occasional accordion.
Described as combining the quiet introspection of The National, the emotive questing of Grizzly Bear and the wandering melodies of Bon Iver, Ocean Leaves plays with both light and dark in their sound and is set to give Toowoomba a live show that’s not to be missed.
They’ll be supported by local alt country, blues, rock, jazz trio The Hobsons, who are due to soon deliver their debut album that’s been recorded locally at Highfields Sound & Productions. Opening the evening will be singer songwriter Shane Mead whose distinctive voice soars over his well thought out guitar arrangements.
Doors open at 8pm and entry to the show is great value at only $10. Bring some extra cash as Ocean Leaves are sure to have plenty of copies of the EP available for purchase. The show is open to all ages with a cash bar available for those with ID.
